Denver is actively competing to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention (DNC), positioning itself as the sole Western finalist city. City and state leaders, including Mayor Mike Johnston and Governor Jared Polis, recently welcomed Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin for a multi-day tour aimed at promoting Denver’s bid.
Hosting the convention could inject up to $500 million into the local economy, with Mayor Johnston comparing its impact to “four Super Bowls in a row.” However, the effort would require an estimated $75 to $90 million in fundraising. The city’s business leaders, such as Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce board chair Mowa Haile, have shown support despite acknowledging broader economic uncertainties. Ultimately, local businesses are anticipated to prioritize the economic benefits of the event over its cultural value.
While the potential economic boost is significant, the bid also raises questions about the allocation of resources and the impact on local communities. Residents and community leaders are encouraged to engage in discussions about how hosting the DNC aligns with Denver’s long-term goals and values.
